An unfortunate comment to say in the company of Celts many of whom are ginger.
The Scottish Word:

“Crivens, this’s the first time ah’ve ivir seen a ginge ahead o the gemm.”

gemm, gem, gam: game.

“My goodness this is the first time I have ever seen a red haired person ahead of the game.” (ahead of the game: out in front, winning, in whatever situation).

[gemm spelled out in the phonetic alphabet.]

Illustration Friday. ahead.

In fact it was the Russians who came in first in the women’s section of the London Marathon today.

So you could say that the Reds did come out in front.

The Scottish Word: gemm with its definition and its meaning illustrated and captioned with the word used in context in the Scots language and in English.
