As for pseudo science and gadgets that get a hero out of a jam.

All too often it’s the writers being too lazy to write a good story.

The ‘and with one bound our hero is free’ effect.

Dr Who’s sonic screwdriver is busily being overused to that end.

Every time there’s an awkward transition or difficult twist in the plot, give it a quick sonic screw and all is well.
